Space plays and pauses only when something is loaded in the player, and not while you're typing in a text field or a sheet is open. While you're typing, ⌘← and ⌘→ (with or without ⇧) move the cursor in the text, as they do in any text field, and ⌘↑ and ⌘↓ do the same, instead of changing songs or the volume.

Media keys, headphones and AirPods
The play/pause, next and previous keys on your keyboard, the buttons on headphones and AirPods, and Control Center all control ClassicTunes while it's the app playing. To have the Play key open ClassicTunes instead of the Music app when nothing is playing, see Settings › General › Play key in Settings.
From AppleScript and Shortcuts
Every playback control has a script command and a Shortcuts action, so you can give them keys of your own (for example, with a shortcut assigned a key in the Shortcuts app):
tell application "ClassicTunes" to playpause
In Shortcuts, use Play/Pause, Next Track, Previous Track or Set Volume. See AppleScript and Shortcuts.
